so basically, I take it that the YZF600R would be a pretty difficult bike to learn on and therefore, ill-advised. However, I seem to get the impression that it's not impossible, just not recommended. I'll definitely take that into consideration when I end up making a decision.

I appreciate the help.

"Difficult to learn on" is one aspect. With its twitchy control and power response, it can be harder for a beginner to master things like low speed handling. The other aspect (and I think the more important one) is that the YZF will not be forgiving of beginner mistakes. Beginners make a lot of mistakes and are more likely to be able to recover successfully on a tamer ride.
