Question: Where can I learn how to ride a bike?

#1 Unread post by Docusate »

I live in Brooklyn, NY if that helps at all.

Anyway, I'm looking for a place to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Problem is , I don't know what schools are good, how much it costs to pay for the course, etc etc. Can anyone help?

And as far as equipment goes, I have a German helmet and a pair of Timberlands that just goes up to my ankles. I'm probably going to have to get a new helmet because the one have is feels like a single piece of stamped sheet metal wrapped around the tip of my head.

I'm not sure how things work in NY, but I do know that they have several MSF schools in the state. Have you tried asking this question at any of your local bike dealers?

Take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Beginning Riders Course. These courses are designed to take someone with no experience (You have to be able to ride a bike though!) And teach you how to be street legal. They start off slow and build up from there.

Check it out here ... (looks like it will cost you about $375, which is cheap when you consider the course is designed to teach you how to save your life on the street ...)

I don't know the exact location where you live but I am sure one of these MSF locations must be reasonably close

Okay, doc... i looked back into your profile to get some more info. You're only 17. And want to learn to ride...

My first recommendation (though you probably arent' gonna like it much), is to spend some time in a car, learning how traffic behaves. It will greatly improve your chances of NOT getting killed by some idiot in an SUV, or even another 17 year old who just wasn't looking for a motorcycle, so didn't see it before pulling out.

I guess I'll go get a car first then. The only reason why I got my Class D license was to get the road test waiver for my motorcycle :)
