Question about Permits

#1 Unread post by Chris8187 »

I know this could be different for other states, but I think you could still help me. I keep reading that the motorcycle permit expires after 90 days. I want to know if they are talking about permits that have not been validated or all the permits in general? I think it would only expire if you have not passed the vision and written test, but I want to make sure. Maybe I should just call the dmv :?

here in CA...

they give the permit after you pass the eye and written exams, then you have 12 months before it expires to get your official license.

I suspect that that applies to your written test permit - the piece of paper that says that you have passed the written test and are allowed to ride a bike for learning purposes (with another licensed rider of course) but you will need to take your final (road) test within 90 days or you will be required to complete the written exam again.

Likely different for different places - having gotten my Class 6 (Motorcycle) license, I will have it for the rest of my life, or at least until such time as I am no longer capable of retaining my driver's license, or I choose not to renew my motorcyle license when I renew my driver's license (yah, like that's gonna happen - NOT!)

I thought that foar awhile, Whyte, but I also saw that the vision and written test results are valid for two years, so I am leaning towards that I have to complete both tests before the 90 days expire, which I have done. I just need to make sure for the MSF class.

In indiana you take a 25 question test to recieve a learners permit that allows you to ride during the day with a helmet and no passenger for 1 year. You can take the riding test anytime during that 1st year to get fully endorsed provided you pass. the riding test in indiana is a difficult one and usually only about 60% pass. The majority of those who showed up on full dress large cruisers failed.

same here in califrnia except that you have to wait at least 6 months from the time you get your permit to be even able to get a license.

permit only expires when your actual drivers licence expires.

here is an example:

an old friend of mine has had a drivers licence for many years, he took the riders permit written test around 1 month ago and passed, his driver's license expired 2 weeks ago, thus he had to take the riders permit test AGAIN when he renewed his license.

....he didn't take the test again, he renewed his driver's license but he's riding without a premit....kinda dumb if you ask me

I just found out. In New Jersey, you have 90 days from the day you get the permit to pass the road test, or the permit expires.

Arizona allows 6 months on the permit with a 6 month renewal after taking the written. No night, no freeway and no passenger driving, otherwise you're on your own. Get full licencing through the MSF course anytime during the period. Or of course you can be among the 60% that never get a licence to ride a motorcycle and still do.
