Long Way Round on TV

Speaking of the Chopper guys and England.....

I watched it last night. They didn't build a bike.

They went to England. They went on a doubledecker bus tour, they rented a minivan, they rented scooters and kilts at the same time , they went to the Land Rover test range, they toured the Triumph factory and were given a stable of new bikes to thrash for a week or so.......they did alot of other stuff that many riders I know would give a bodypart to do, and made no bones about how unthrilled they were about most of it......

Best part for me was a when they were taken on a bike ride by some local fellow, and while most of the bikes were metric cruisers, one was sweet little BSA Goldstar in wonderful condition. The old man rode it and commented how nice it was. So responsive and agile and fast......
Well yeah, compared to what you've been riding at home........

I'm sick of the Chopper boys myself. Every episode is the same: Where's junior? Senior's steamed. Mikey's lazy. Let's destroy something. Let's play some sport with the guys that build railings. I also don't find the bikes as radically designed as the earlier ones, like the jet bike, the black widow, etc. And I really don't get turned on seeing corporate bikes get built. A couple of them were pretty cool, but it's gotten a bit out of hand. In addition, I congratulate them on thier success, but now that they have all these million dollar machines and a staff of like 40, it's harder to relate to characters compared to when it was just like 5 of them. The building process doesn't seem to be as challenging to them anymore, either; which takes away the critical element of struggle from the development of the plot.

Oh. . .haven't had a chance to catch the whole Long Way Round thingy; but it SOUNDS a bit dull. . .

In its defense (Long way round, not choppers), it does show how hard it would be to ride across the world on two wheels. It can be done, but with a support team it seemed near impossible in Asia. There were places where the only extra guy with them was the camera guy, on a third bike. I suppose like most TV, it won't be everyone's cup of tea. I think I stayed with it to see how they dealt with things. No matter how supported they were, they were not in Hollywood, air conditioned, safe world. At one poin the support van tips over because the roads are so bad. I think the last episode annoyed me bad, but the rest was pretty interesting. I saw parts of the world that I'm never like to visit, and watched these rich actors try to cope with real hard times.

I realy enjoyed the long way round.And yes it did want to make me buy a GS and head off round the world.Made be laugh they only two accidents both in or near Calgary .Now the whole world can see what us Calgary riders have to put up with.
The only thing that kinda of bothered me was I have more respect for people that have gone before.Simple because they dont have the support vechicles or the money to know if it got realy bad they could be helped in numerous ways.But I dont blame them for taking the support vechiles if I had the money I deffinatly would but after seeeing that I have so much respect for anyone who has done it.

Riding it yourself is something I'd love to do.

Watching someone else ride it is not as exciting; hate to say.

The DVD LW-Round is being released with extra footage, I guess a 'Directors Cut' style thing.

I think I'll hire it out one day when I'm 'Snowed in' (Under)....whatever....

Perhaps there is more Meat in this longer version????
