i aint worked on a cm400 but all the carbs i have pulled which are quite a few required disconnecting the air cleaner box and moving it back enough to get the carbs out after loosening the clamps on the intakes and removing the choke and throttle cables--had a yamaha radian that removing the front motor mount and letting the engine down gave enough clearance to get carbs out.

It's pretty straight forward if you have a look at it.
Going from memory:
Turn off petcock and disconnect fuel line.
Remove the bolts holding it to the head. Two on each intake.
Losen the clamps holding it to the airbox.
Remove two screws holding the cable assembly.
Then it's just a matter of wiggling it around and pulling it away from the airbox.
I can probably help more if you have any specific questions. I've had mine off a few times, and it's the same as your bike.

you need to try and find where they are leaking now so you wont have to pull them again.put them on a box or something up off the floor and take a oil squirt can fill them with gas through the fuel inlet line.keep them level and watch for leaks.if you dont want to play with gas use mineral spirits.
