Best Roads to Ride

My favorite road to ride on is US-12 in southern Michigan. It's not an especially interesting road to ride, except in the Irish Hills areas near Michigan International Speedway-but during the riding months here, it is usually covered with bikes. There's someone to hang out with at every stop, and due to the heavy bike traffic-people in cars actually seem to be mindful of us.

I'll agree with you on this one. Blue Ridge Parkway. One nice ride.
I did it solo about 5 years ago. Well worth the trip if you have the time. Speed limit 25 mph.

I love that road too, but I have never been on it on a bike. My wife had family in Coldwater and we lived in Metro Detroit, so 12 was the best way to get there if you didn't want to take the interstate.

While we are on the subject of Montana, have you ever been on the bear tooth highway. There is another great road, and not much traffic at all.

Not to mention "Going To The Sun Highway" in Glacier National Park. This is the very first road I have EVER been on where the cages consistently pulled over to let me pass. 62 miles from one gate to the other, and what do you do when you get to the end - turn around and ride it the other way - what views.

I agree on Beartooth Pass, which is now open again after the major repairs from the mudslide last spring, along with Chief Joseph Highway. Add to that Rte 14A in northern Wyoming. Just watch out for the horse droppings from the trail groups.

I have not taken any long distance cruises yet but there are a few places near home that make a great day trip.

First would be Martha's Vinyard. Taking a car to the Vinyard is a pain in the ***. You have to make plans months in advance and then you wait in line for hours. When you show up on your bike you don't need a reservation and you move to the front of the line. It cost $80 for bike and two riders round trip. Once there the ride is fantastic. The island is not that large, ( about 7 miles across) so you can't get lost for long. There are some great places to eat right on the ocean and since you are on your bike you can park easily. In a car, parking is tough. There are several places you must see while there. First go to Oak Bluffs and park you bike, Great place to walk around. Second you must go to Gayhead to see the beaches and cliffs. ( bathing suits optional on this beach ) Third go to minimpsha (sp) to see a new england fishing village.

Another great day trip around here is Newport RI. If you like carving and high speed forget this trip. Traffic moves slow but this gives you time to see the sites. Ocean drive has less traffic and the roads have some nice twisties. A slow cruise by the Newport mansions and Thames street is a must. I must admit that I often loose the helmet on this trip since it is not required in RI.

I am hoping to do the Kangamangus Highway in the New Hampshire White Mt. I hear this is a great trip in the fall when foliage is in bloom. Has anyone done this trip?

Well it may not be one of the best rides in the World but I had a great little trip taking route66 from Kingman AZ to Bullhead City AZ it goes through Oatman a little old west mining town real neet ride couple nice stops in the middle real good over looks. Lots of real fun Curvy sections. My advice though dont go in the middle of the Summer as I did comming down into bullhead felt like driving into a Blast furness try spring or fall the desert sun is a killer I was bright red for a month.

Independence Pass in Colorado is one of the best. It winds and twists, sometimes only one lane wide, from Aspen over to Twin Lakes, south of Leadville. You can check it out here: http://www.motorcyclecolorado.com/independence_pass.htm

Of course the Beartooth up in Montana is fabulous, although that road was closed due to a landslide the last I heard.

I need to know of some lovely roads down here in San Diego...I know of lots of really nice side roads and whatnot back up in Northern California and Southern Oregon...but down here I feel as though I'm very limited to the superslab

Anyone from the SD/LA area know of some nice roads?

Rt. 6 northern Pennsylvania. Especially in the fall.
