Hi new member here - new to calgary - question

#1 Unread post by dankko »

Hi, Im happy to finally be here in Calgary. Now that I have found a job I have started to think about my motorcycle more and more. Im wondering if anyone can recomend a good motorcycle shop. I think I may have warped a valve by improperly adjusting them, and then riding for a while. My bike is a 454 LTD Kawasaki 86

The engine is almost identical to the ex 500 - the ninga 500 engine - just a different bore and stroke. - so I wonder if anyone has paid to have a valve replacement on an engine like this.

Thanks,
Marc

I am pretty familiar with most of the shops in town, but have never owned an Kawi (oops, i actually did have a 1984ish GPz750 for a little while, but i never really considered it one of my bikes, because i just bought it, fixed it, sold it).

Anyway, i know one private shop that is very Kawi oriented (drag racers), and that is Universal Cycle Services (one block west of Edmonton Trail, at about 39th Avenue NE). The owner is Don Fergin. He usually tells is like it is. Also very close to them (on Edmonton Trail and 39th Avenue) is Pro-AM Motorcycles. They are now under new ownership, (better owners), and the service manager has been a mainstay for a long time, Brian Chesterman. Good guy.

If you are on the south side of town, try Performance Cycle and Auto (owner, Mike Briggs), or the big boys in town, Blackfoot Motorsports.

I can also vouch for Universal. Great people to deal with. Don also has a good stock of used parts upstairs if you are looking for something.

Yeah the guys at Universal are OK, but like every shop in town they all want top dollar for labour, and top dollar for used parts, another guy to try is my fellow brit, and some time drinking parter MARK at TJ's on BLackfoot, hes ok and if you get there at the end of the day he sometimes does a good deal on any spares you may need, but like everyone in the bussiness they all need to make money. cause rent is so high in calgary, and you wont get anything for nothing,

What I would do is get one of these shops to do a compression test, and go from there.
another option is find a private indirvidual to help you, I would usually be one of the first to step in and help, but I have four bikes in my garage right now that are not mine that Ive offered to help some friends with.
