interestingly enough, I was chatting to one of the sales guys in pidcocks (nottingham) the other day (bike getting serviced), and he seemed to have reasonably good recommendations for next bikes (first step up from a 125cc)

To the point about the boy not learning his lesson - if you watch the DVD Faster, every one of those racers get on the line with broken legs, ankles, hands, etc. - some times people seem foolishly stubborn, but maybe they're just driven!

I'll second the comment that the job of teaching some wisdom is up to the parents - if I went to buy a bike and the sales guy told me he didn't think I had the skills, I'd be pretty angry. If we are going to blame the purveyor of dangerous goods, let's tar and feather the liquor store owners. Sure killed more drivers than fast bikes.

it is true that lots of salesmen out there could care less about the person, all they want is that nice chunk of commision. But there are also a fair amount of salesmen out there with a conscience, just too bad there werent more, cause theres a lot of people out there that look to the salesmen to educate them on what bike to get, and they basically get lied to and end up getting something way too powerful, or way to heavy for them.

I was at a motorcycle store in Tampa today, just checking out gear and the like when I noticed a salesman and a customer looking at the suzukis. I watched as the customer moved from the gixxer to the hayabusa and overheard him ask "which one is the brake?" then explain that he had ridden a dirt bike while a young teen but not since. He appeared to be in his thirtys. Anyway, he made his way to the busa, and the ZX 12 and not once did the salesman suggest that he might want to get familiar with riding a bit before getting such a powerful bike. You could say it's up to the customer to know what he's getting into and I would agree, but if he hasn't ever ridden, I don't see how he can even fathom the power of a superbike. I couldn't be a salesman and sell a powerful bike to a novice. I think that's just bad business.

Actually I doubt many people will listen to a salesman and take his advise. If you want a specific bike and he/she tries to sell you up, you'll disregard because you just know he/she is working on commision. If he tries to sell you down because the bike you are looking at may be too much for you, what guy will admit that he might not be able to handle that. Not too many if around the 20 year mark.

We had an example of a young fellow that killed himself up here just a month back. I don't know what the salesman told him but his friends told him the bike was too much for him, Several friends, not just one. So what did he do? Just like the fellow in the first post, he hid it from his parents, and bought a badass powerhouse 1000 cc crotch rocket. He lived until the following day when he broke all current laws regarding his license class as well as highway speed limit etc and piled the bike into a rock wall. OOPS! Won't be doing that again...
