i had my helmet on top of my head, my head wasn't in it, i was just holding it on top of my head and all of a sudden, one of my friends pushed me causing the helmet to pop out of my hands and fall on the floor (which was just bricks) no carpet, no nothing.

Dude not bright. I have to admit I laugh when I see all the 'cool scooter kids' doing this.

If I take my lid off on my bike I put it between my legs, otherwise its in a hand, hooked on an elbow or on the floor.

trust me, i've learned my lesson, i'm gonna always have my helmet somewhere out of reach and close to the ground and NEVER ever am i gonna keep it on top of my head.

Been there...I once got off my bike, put my helmet on my tail, and went into the garage to get a rag to check the oil. Got back on the bike, checked it, and swung my leg around the back to get off completely forgetting the helmet was there. Thud.

PS: The pic in my sig was before this happened...you can bet I dont put the helmet there anymore.

i kinda know how you'd go about doing that. i used to put the helmet on the back seat when i was filling her in at a gas station....but it never actually dropped because i caught it in it........the entire time, i was worrying about the hemet and i knew it was gonna fall, yet i still left it on the seat......weird how my mind works.

I find its easier not to take the helmet off at the gas station...I dont even get off the bike or put the stand down anymore (now of course my bike is pretty light weight-wise with a low cog) but I found it was taking me longer to take off my helmet and get on/off my bike than it was for me to stick my card in the machine, pop the tank and fillerup and ride off!

That is patently untrue. There's almost certainly nothing wrong with your helmet (other than maybe cosmetically). Even the Snell Foundation says that you don't need to go buy a new helmet for a garden variety parking lot drop. Think about it - an unladen helmet drop won't even come close to bending the hard plastic shell enough to deform the foam inside. Now if you'd dropped your helmet from 20 feet or if you fell on concrete with your head inside it might be a different story.

The 'drop it and get a new one' maxim is a wives tale in my opinion. It probably used to have some validity but I don't believe it's the case for modern helmets. And I certainly wouldn't expect the manufacturers to try to disabuse us of the notion.

I've seen it debunked several times from what I believe are reputable sources - here's one I could find off the top of my head...

"If you drop a helmet from a few feet, say the seat of a motorcycle, is it okay?
Basically, yes. It takes a lot to damage a helmet. If the helmet fell onto a hard surface and your head was in it, you should replace it. "

If you have serious doubts about your helmet by all means get a new one. I'm as big a safety nut as the next guy but dropping your helmet off the seat of your bike is not even close to damaging your helmet enough to make you get a new one.

Expensive way to find out your helmet isn't a toy! I hope you don't ride with those guy's because obviously they don't have a clue. I hope your lid is OK. Also, as long as I'm here, I just got back from a trade show and ran into a guy who makes some nice tail bags and a really nice locking helmet bag. I'll add the link so you can check em out. I'm thinking of getting the helmet bag myself.

I personally bought a cheap lock from ebay (a regular lock with a long metal strap) for locking the helmet to the bike on the handlebars), safer than just putting it in a tailbag and it won't fall. I only do that at the store or on errands though, as I always bring my helmet into my office at work.

It is now an old wives tale, but it had some validity in the past. In the old days, most higher end helmet shells were made from multiple layers of fiberglass. A good drop could seriously crack the inner layers of glass, while just leaving a cosmetic ding on the outside. I had a second hand helmet that I pulled apart and found huge cracks in the glass under the styrofoam-like interior padding. The outside just had a few dings.

With the advent of todays high tech, injection molded shells, the "drop and get a new one" theory doesn't really carry much weight any more.
