You should be able to find an old cb that's mint and low miles and vintage cool for ~ $1500. Parts CAN be tough, but I know lots of suppliers and haven't had a problem. Also, those bikes are very simple to work on and tend to go forever once you have them set up right.

You could also get a Ninja 250R for a pretty good price, and it would be nice and sporty if you ever got a chance to use that, and if sportbikes aren't your thing, Kawasaki also makes a very affordable dirt bike, the KLX110 (MSRP is $1699), and a dual sport bike, the KLR250 which you would have to get used but I've seen used in Newsday (I live on Long Island) for around 2500-3000.

I recommend the ninja 250! thats the bike i just got. People say its underpowered, but it's not (at least for a beginner or for heavy city traffic like NYC). I was impressed by the power of the little 250 and expected a lot less. It's very forgiving but fast enough to get you into trouble easily if youre an idiot on it. Plus it handles very good. I got mine for $2400..its a 04 with 1,500 miles back then.

the ninja is a great bike, but because it's a sport, your looking at 180-200 bucks a month for insurence.

Not true, it's not exactly in the sport bike category and it's only a 250cc. I pay $20 a month for liability, UM, UM Medical and Prop. And I've heard of people who pay even less.

It is in the sport bike category, but its such a small engine that the insurance premiums usually aren't very high. To be honest, you can insure a Ninja 500 for less than 150 a month at age 18 (thats what I'm looking at right now, but I might go for a 250CC instead), and the 250's insurance is always ridiculously low.

And unless you're 6 feet tall or larger, it's a very ergonomic bike that will fit all but the very tall.

So, I'd say check out the S40, a.k.a. the Savage, a.k.a. the Thumper.
wanna see what a 6'2" person looks like on a savage 650?
