So what can we as riders do about the persistent characterization of the intimidating, heavily tattooed, large man in leather chaps and the new bad boy image?

well, we can not be that if thats not what you want. I think riding to get any image is dumb. I ride cause i like it, not cause i wanna look cool or anything, though it is a plus :-p. I dont care about people what people think about bikers or their image. If they want to argue about it ill get into it with em but if they want to judge people for riding or what they wear ill let em cause its not my problem. I wear a riding jacket, helmet, gloves and jeans or dickies when i ride, i have one visable tattoo. NOt really a hard "O Ring" look. If people wanna claim that im a bad "O Ring" or watever, ill kindly tell em they are mistaken and carry one with what im doing. Hope that made some sense
Made sense to me. I also have tattoos (all for me and nobody else), I wear a black leather jacket (because it's warm in the winter and will hopefully save me some skin - in the Summer, however, I wear a mesh jacket). I also wear a full-face helmet, which isn't very consistent with a bad-azz image, eh? If people want to avoid me because of their (mis)perception of my "image", then fine - they're not the kind of people I would want to know anyway. Now, if I'm riding my motorcycle like a maniac and terrorizing folks on the street, then they can judge away. I don't care about the whole "image" factor though. And it's not my job to enlighten people who can't open their minds on their own.
Cheers,
Loonette
