I sometimes wear a pair of Joe Rocket Phoenix summer riding pants as an over layer, and this protects from dirt, grime, and I guess to some degree road rash if I had a mishap. In the cold weather the also create a wind protection due to the built up front side and knee pads. The are easy to put on and take off, although with the knee pads they are a bit bulky to tuck into a backpack.

Are they overpants? I've probably got 10,000 miles on my Roadcrafter and I can still put it on over my clean khakis and they come out just as clean.

PM me with your size, I have a pair holding down my dresser (never used them after I bought my Roadcrafter).

so how important are 'special' pants vs levis jeans?

pants are pricey i was thinking of cutting a corner here.

I think even a $100 set of overpants is better than a road-rashed bum. I've seen it firsthand and the thought of not being able to sit comfortably for months is well worth dropping $100 on.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
