Outriggers/training wheels

A friend lost part of his lower right leg to that flesh eating disease. He wears a prosthesis. He feels comortable operating the foot brake but is concerned if he has to use his right leg for balance when stopped. Either here or in a magazine I saw a letter from someone with a similar problem and enquiring if there was some sort of outrigger that would deploy to provide a back up for balance when stopped. If memory serves somebody responded positively. If anybody knows of such a device could you advise. Meanwhile I am going to check all my bike magazines in case it was a letter to the editor. Seeing that I have Multiple Sclerosis and have thought about using such a product if my condition worsened. I have done some serious searching for anything like it and only found units built for 50cc dirt bikes for kids. People say they have seen them but do not know where they came from. I can only assume they where custom built if they are out there. Keep lookin and hopefully someone else may know who, what and where to get them.

I ride quite a bit with some older Gold Wing guys. A couple of these guys have Outrigger type wheels on thier Wings that come down at 15 mph and retract above that speed. These things are pretty expensive but when ever I've seen them they seem to work well. A plesant alternative to not being able to ride I suppose. I don't know the brand name of these things but could probably find out if anyone is interested.

A sidecar would probably work for some people. It'd also be a good way to store some gear.

I saw an older gentleman up at Americade a few years ago with the landing wheels that came down below 15 mph. I think it was this setup for 1800 Wing:

there is also a company called Voyager. they do trike conversions, but the conversion is actually two outrigger wheels and fenders. you still have the one drive wheel. with this setup you can put the bike back to standard config, and keep the conversion for adaptation to the next bike.

The Voyager kit is the one I was trying to think of. Thanks, Norm.

The kit still allows the bike to lean in turns, just not as far as without.
