Scratch removal from exhaust

Hi,
I have a number of scratches on my exhaust. I was wondering what the best method is to reduce these. Various scratch removal compounds are available, but are these heat resistant? simply using chrome polish shines upu the smooth portions, but the scratches still remain. (I think the older owner used sandpaper on the mufflers). So now I've managed to polish most of the rust off, but I'd like to reduce the appearance of the scratches.
