V45 Magna starting while warm problems.

#1 Unread post by 84Magna »

Hi Guys
I have a little problem here, I have a 84 V45 Magna that starts like a charm on a cold start, but if i've been running 20 mins or so for it to get warm, It won't start untill it cools down for a while. This only started after I got transmission & head gasket work done on it by a pro.
I've checked the battery leads, all cleaned and tight, it's a new battery, even changed it to see. When I put a bigger battery, lets say jump it with my truck it will start even when it's warm.
Sooo I took out my starter to check the brushes, clean it up etc. The brushes are still almost 10mm long, The braid connecting the brush to the battery lead has sevral strands that are broken, but it might only be like 1/10 of all the strands that are good. 2 questions here, you guys think this might be my problem? and Would soldering them back together make it work? (I just realised maybe the heat going through that braid while starting would be greater than the melting point of solder...)
My other concern is the commutator, it feels ineven when I turn the stator with my fingers pressing on the commutator, it also has chips on the end of every "plate" of the commutator, is this normal?
Thanks alot!

I may have my facts(rumors?) mixxed up here, but I think that engine had a history of dodgey starters. And it sounds like you got one.
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

Does it turn over and not start or does it not even turn over at all when hot? Do you hear a click when you hit the button?
I would be the old, slow guy. Just let me know where you are going and I'll try to get there before you leave.

it turns, just that it doesn't turn strong enough to get it started, like a kid trying to kick start a bike
