Motorcycle Safety

#1 Unread post by Dare »

Hi fellow riders.
I am a university student currently under taking my final major project, my chosen topic motorcycle safety clothing.
I chose this topic because we only represent 1% of road users and yet count for 14% of deaths on the road, and this figure has been steadily increasing over the past few years.
By the end of the project I aim come up with a better solution for personal protection for motorcyclists.
This is a preliminary questionnaire and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Motorcycle Questionnaire (only 7 Questions)

1. What motorcycle do you ride (make and model)?

2. What age group do you reside?

16-20
21-30
31-40
41-50
51-60
60+

3. What safety equipment do you wear when riding?
Please list:

4. Have you ever sustained injury from an accident?

5. If so where was the injury sustained?

6. Is there a part of your body that you believe is not protected enough by the safety clothing available at the moment?

7. What safety garment should be offered that the market does not offer at the moment?

Thankyou for your time.

3. What safety equipment do you wear when riding?
Please list:
full face helmet
armored (textile) Jacket
armored (textile) pants
leather gloves with armor
motorcycle-specific boots

4. Have you ever sustained injury from an accident?
YES

5. If so where was the injury sustained?
left wrist fracture - my thumb got hooked in the handlebar and hyperextended the wrist. I don't think any article of gear could have prevented this injury.
soft tissue damage to right knee - from the weight of the motorcycle landing on my leg. I slid some 100' with my motorcycle on my leg. I sustained no "road rash."

6. Is there a part of your body that you believe is not protected enough by the safety clothing available at the moment?
NO

7. What safety garment should be offered that the market does not offer at the moment?
I don't feel that there is any single garment that could be added to what is available. At issue is what will protect without restricting movement or effecting comfort adversely. Too many riders simply will not wear any sort of protective gear, wear insufficient gear, or wear improperly fitted gear. One thing that is lacking in the US is any sort of universal standard for protective clothing as there is in Europe (The CE rating system).

Don't give up.

Not now, not soon, not after being continually knocked down.

If you never give up, you can never truly fail.
