but let's assume the person can't afford a new helmet but still wants to ride....so he'll wear the helmet thinking that it's fine.....taking it to the airport and seeing that big crack in the outer shell might make him rethink riding until he has enough money.Sevulturus wrote:But if you don't have a professional look at it, you have NO way of knowing if it's safe or not, you only have the opinion of some one who doesn't know anything about helmets. Somehow I doubt airport security would give me a warm reception if I walked in with a helmet and asked them to put it in their machine and let me look at it.

I think you missed my point. The big crack the airport scanners will pick up will be visible to the naked eye. What do you think happens? the inside only cracks and the outer shell remains fine?Dirtytoes wrote:but let's assume the person can't afford a new helmet but still wants to ride....so he'll wear the helmet thinking that it's fine.....taking it to the airport and seeing that big crack in the outer shell might make him rethink riding until he has enough money.Sevulturus wrote:But if you don't have a professional look at it, you have NO way of knowing if it's safe or not, you only have the opinion of some one who doesn't know anything about helmets. I stand by my statement that the airport personal have no idea what they are doing when it comes to inspecting a helmet. They will not see damage that is likely to affect the safety of the helmet, unless it is something that is visible to the naked eye.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Online store = bad idea. You need to try on the helmet first and make sure its comfortable.
Its just my personal preference, but I consider it inappropriate to go to a store, try on a helmet and use their staff's time, and then go elsewhere to buy it to save 20 bucks. Plus you can ask the sales staff how long they've had that particular inventory for.
Also I've read that helmets deteriorate over time even when not in use. Is it 5 years? Anyway many of those online shops have old inventory bought from unsold helmets at retail outlets, so they've been sitting around for a year or more without use, reducing their usable lifespan.

Right, I'll probably end up in jail for 10 years just for the commentJust tell them you thought you heard the helmet ticking

Remember though that a used helmet is still better than no helmet.
But yah you can get a decent helment for about a hundred bucks or so. Won't be aerydynamicallyd designed for maximum comfort and style but it'll protect your noggin. Might be kinda loud though.
Oh and you can still try helmets on at the dealership (that's all I use them for, trying on jackets/helmets/sitting on motorcycles). I can't imagine there being that much difference between a large (of the same brand and make) at the dealership and a large off line.
