Are you in a safe State to ride in?

So Progressive released a study today about which States were the best and worst to ride in (number of reported claims for collisions) and the ditto for thefts.... A very Abbreviated list

Metro Areas In Which A Motorcycle is Most Likely to be Crashed
1. New York, N.Y.-N.J.
2. Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Portsmouth

Metro Areas In Which A Motorcycle is Least Likely to be Crashed
1. Columbus, OH
2. Oxnard, CA

Metro Areas In Which A Motorcycle is Most Likely to be Stolen
1. Honolulu
2. Miami, FL

Metro Areas In Which A Motorcycle is Least Likely to be Stolen
1. Nashville, TN
2. Pittsburgh. PA

Notice my town of Fort Lauderdale is #8 on the most stolen motorcycle city list...and to think i was considering keeping the Deuce out on the street to have it closer to home....

Guess she's staying in my buddy's garage when I not riding it :cry:

I'd like to see that list cross-referenced with the populations of bikers, or are the numbers taking that into account.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

You said exactly what I mentioned in my blog when I covered this story (in a little more detail of course....)

Unless you apply the claims against the number of registered motorcycles, you'll never have true numbers....

Could this be why thefts are higher in warmer area's of the US...more bikes to steal from :lol:

so my plan to try to commute from my place in NJ into NYC (once i get my license/take MSF/ Get Bike) is a bad idea? :frusty: :laughing:

maybe I will take a trip to VA to learn to ride might be safer :roll:

Los Angles should be there some where. We got terrible drivers, lots of drivers, crappy highways, and high crime. I feel insulted that our city isnt bad enough for this list

Of course that part of Virginia is largely military and with all that we hear about military guys coming back buying a sport bike and then using it to introduce their face to pavement... maybe that's not a big surprise

Hurray, I live in an area that I will probably get in an accident.... Although, New Jersey does have a crap load of people living in it, so maybe that evens it out.

You were definitely right about the norfolk rate being high because of all the sailor boys and girls. My mom and her boyfriend are navy and he has wrecked the bike once a year for 3 years. Aside from that about 50% of her friends have wrecked their bikes in the past three years. its ridiculous. the worst part is they all ride hogs and they still wreck a lot! im surpirsed by them saying columbus is least likly to wreck because its a biggish city, and it is a huge college town with 5 universities.

I wonder if the NYC numbers are skewed by scooters, there are a ton (of probably unlicensed) delivery guys on scooters doing massively unwise things.

I travel alot in the ny metro area the driving is unlike anything I can explain if ya know ya know if not try it sometime
