The world premiere of the GX3 at the LA Auto Show

Pure affordable performance: Crossover between sports car and motorcycle

It only takes 5.7 seconds to go from 0-62.5 mph (100 km/h) and the fuel consumption in the city is estimated to be 46 mpg (5.2 l/100 km)

GX3 was conceived for the U.S. by the Moonraker team and VW’s Design Center in California

Three wheels, two seats, and off you go in the carpool lane

Wolfsburg / Los Angeles, 4 January 2006. In a world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen presents the GX3 – a completely new type of motorcycle. The GX3 was conceived by the Moonraker team and VW’s Design Center in California, exclusively with the U.S. in mind, to bring an exciting idea to a fully functioning concept. With its three wheels and unique design, this Volkswagen opens up a new driving dimension.

What if you could carve up the back roads and cruise solo in the carpool lane?

A motorcycle with VW features: Light, fast, and environmentally friendly, the GX3 shows that conceptually it is much closer to a motorcycle than to a classic type automobile. This two-seater Volkswagen is one of a kind - bold, young, and affordable. It opens a new driving dimension, turns even the daily commute to work into a small trip to freedom, allows you to cruise in the carpool lane, even if you’re driving solo (the GX3 is a motorcycle, after all!) and with its keen handling it opens up completely new horizons for recreational driving.

There's been some neat trike/car things over the years, and the blurb i read on the VW in a magazine said it is quite likely to be going into production.

If you cant ride, or dont feel like putting the feet down ;-) then these little sportscar/trikes would be a great toy...

Another cool one is a 170HP engined Puegot called the "20CUP"... just google. It's more of a show car i think, but eveyone is looking for marketing niches, and maybe one of these will go mainstream. Fuel economy, performance, small size... i think the world is set for one of these to be on every corner!

There is no way some crazy donkey talking on his cellphone in an SUV is going to see something that low on the road.

True. just as invisible as when one is on a motorcycle, however driving that low to the ground makes it tougher to see around SUVs too.. i guess it will add to the excitement :D

This web-site has specs, pics & movies of lots of nice trikes, including the latest mainstay T-Rex and classic '33 Morgan:

I see the VW has a quite streetable 125HP, whereas the Peugeot's 170HP
seems like something for spec-class racing. Both are very different but equally cool.. more vids, pics, specs:

I really love the "cycle" fenders on the VW

news snippet:

"As crazy as it looks, the GX3 is remarkably well wrought for a concept, which leads us to our favorite part: according to Bernhardt, it may actually be produced as soon as 2007, at a price that of less than $17,000, if customer reaction is positive enough. Furthermore, as a motorcycle-style vehicle, VW says, the GX3 would be cleared for solo driving in California's HOV lanes--a la hybrid cars--making it a commuter's dream come true. However, being in the motorcycle class, it would require a motorcycle driver's license to operate. And yes, one would have to wear a helmet in states with helmet laws; a small price to pay for such big fun."
