If it makes you feel any better I went for a ride last season with my buddy. About... 10km out of town his bike died. We both knew what was wrong, he'd emptied the tank and needed to switch it to reserve. So we pulled over as he coasted to a stop, and I slapped my hands on my engine to warm them up. He flicked it over to reserve and cranked it, and cranked it and cranked it and cranked it. Then he cranked it some more. Finally I pulled up beside him, and took a look. Calmly suggested that he switch it from "off" to "reserve"...

You aren't the first, and you won't be the last ;)
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Personally I love to hear these stories, we have all done stupid stuff in our time and this serve to remind us. There is some stuff I would not be as brave as you to post.
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R
