sweetz... my wife is 5'4" and long bodied. She sat on the Vulcan 500 with only her toes on the ground. She never sat on the Savage, she didn't like the look of one lonely cylinder. The she tried a Honda VLX 600. Perfect. The seat is very low, you sit "in" the bike instead of "on" it. She loved the look best, too. It's got enough pep to keep up with bigger bikes unless they want to leave you. I get hers up to 80 on the interstate with no problems and I'm 6'1", 200 lb. Yeah, it's only a 4 spd tranny, but after riding it you don't even think about it. At least she and I don't.
Bottom line is to try several and see what fits you best and what you like the look of the best. Also, while sitting on any bike, hold the handgrips and turn the bars all the way left and right. Note how much of a stretch it is for your arms. Do you have to lean really far forward? It can affect some aspects of controlling the bike.
I bought an older (1996) Vulcan 800 a month ago and so far, I love it. Very comfy ride. I coach high school baseball an hour away through the end of May so I'm doing 100 miles a day commute with it. It's getting me about 45-50 mpg so it's also saving me a ton of $$$ on gas (truck gets 15 mpg). Overall, it's a nice bike.
i bought a Kawa 500 Vulcan. i thought like everyone else, have to move to a bigger bike at some point but this is my 4th season with it. i ride back roads and country main routes almost all the time, avg speed 50-55. this bike is nimble, quick and so easy to manuever. i am also a petite female and have no interest in muscling around a big bike in tight places and on steep hills. The 500 is no dog.
Not familiar with the new Suzuki but i was never fond of the Savage. i have also been on major highways with the Vulcan cruisin at 75 and have not got tossed around by open highway wind gusts or lost behind the gang.
