What would you do?

So they let you go at your job. Your out of work. You've been canned. So you apply for your unemployment insurance. There is a bit of a struggle...a lot of hours on the phone. Some anxiety as your a$$hole ex-employer has contested your claim. After a few weeks your claim is approved and the nice claim rep on the phone informs you that you've got 9 months of payments coming. To your surprise it is an adequate amount of money to cover basic monthly expenses. What would you do?

A. Be an honeest Joe...diligently look for work...turn in resumes and applications each as required on your claim forms.

B. Screw the honest Joe...live it up...regardless of how you spend your week...checkie mark appropriate boxes on claim form and keep those checks coming.

Remember spring officially starts in four days and riding season is fast upon us. Your claim will last until September 06.

Do you want to live in the "now" or do you want to live for the future?

What you do is "Live to Ride" and in so doing you look for work in between the Riding. After all you do have to take "rest" breaks every once in a while.

I'd get in some extra riding...while looking for work...in another STATE hey a little road trip never hurt anyone

Many years ago I did something similar, except I quit my job, so no unemployment check. I had saved up some cash, though.

My first order of business was to load camping gear on the bike and take off on a marathon motorcycle tour of the western U.S. and Canada.

I spent 6 weeks and over 5,500 miles bumming around on twisty mountain backroads every day. Living out of a tent and a backpack was pretty inexpensive and I met lots of great people along the way. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. It was a blast.

Fortunately, I found another job a few weeks after I got back.

Only time I ever filed for unemployment, I had been working in college for a place for quite a while. Was on vacation, called to check in and low and behold they had me on the schedule when I was supposed to be in class. Tired of them messing up the schedule, I told them I was giving my 2 weeks. Went in the next day, they fired me for being 'unreliable' (though mind you I was only late or called in when I was on the schedule for days I was supposed to have off!). So when I file for unemployment, they tell them that I quit so I wouldn't qualify.

Depends on the company, but I personally wouldn't think twice about taking them for as much money as you can. Work on the side for cash until the unemployment runs out! Consider it a severance package. I normally wouldn't condone unethical things, but big companies are cold and heartless when it comes to their non-managerial workers.

I don't know any employer who looks favorably upon someone who milked unemployment for 9 months. Play for a month and then start banging the pavement.

Cold and heartless "companies" do not pay for unemployment insurance. Employees do. It's part of your compensation that you don't see because the employer is forced to pay it to the insuring company. You may think you're getting back at the company, but increased unemployment insurance costs are most likely to come out of the hourly workers' next raise.

Ooops. I forgot to add that I don't think I'd have a problem "milking" the system a bit myself. I've been paying for unemployment insurance for nearly 30 yrs and have never once made a claim. If I were eligible to make a claim, I don't see a huge ethical problem with taking my time and making sure I find the right job
