Cleaning a Leather Jacket

Cleaning? I should clean it? ya, I guess I should, but I never think its that dirty... it does'nt smell, and I just wipe it with a damp cloth (water), but I never get the leather wet, just ever so slightly damp, and it dries in 5 minutes, then I sometimes (twice a year) wipe it with some neatsfoot oil (the classic "baseball glove" oil), which is very light and evaporates in only 15 minutes, because i put it on super thin. that's all I do.

Can't be arsed with cleaning it, but waterproofing it is a definite must. As waterproofing cleans it at the same time I'm a happy man.

If it's leather it needs feeding too (like all living things). Feed it and it will last forever. I've got a great old Lewis jacket from 1970s which still looks good, because I dubbined it twice a year every year for the last thirty.

Yes you need to clean and condition leather. I use a product called Lexol. They have a cleaner and a conditioner. Use both. Been using it for years with very good results. In my experience it is safe to use on colors, too. YMMV. Check it out.

We use a leather furniture polish on the outside, works brilliant just do not get the flower smelling one. On the inside we spray our linings with an anti bactirial spray and then let it dry. Couple of weeks ago we rode threee hours in the rain, we had on water proofs but we steamed up from the inside and the leathers were all musty. The above treatment worked like a charm.
