This almost a year later, and I'm curious about mounting my own tires. Seems like I could do the rope thing, but what about balancing?
What is a reasonable rate for balancing and MUST it be done at a MC shop?
do you pull your tires off yourself?
I got my tires replaced- removed wheels myself. Had them mounted and balanced for $70 at the shop down the street, $10 over what i was quoted on the phone. I was too tired to argue.
They said the my Maxxis promax balanced funny, and they had to keep adjust the seating & move the valve marker away from the valve stem to bring it into a better balancing situation.
Tires look great and handle better than the waxy rollerblades I was on before.
110/80/17 & 150/70/'17 Maxxis Promax online with shipping @ $146 and delivered in just a few days (4).

So I figured I saved around $100-150 and gained a wealth of experience (installing the darn things)!

The only time I feel any real catharsis is on a MOTORCYCLE!

I recently dismounted my wheels, and had an independant shop mount and balance new tires for only $10 apiece !!!!!!!!!!! I bought the tires from them too, they matched the best price I found online when you factor in shipping.
I especially like that I know it's put back together right, there was evidence that whoever replaced the tires in the past didn't know what he was doing, way way overtorqued bolts (I hate hamfisted mechanics, and there's lots of them out there).
