Poker Runs what are they?

im a relatilvly new biker, just shy of two years, but plan on doing it for life.
I see all these bike runs and alot are poker runs.
Anybody do one and can explain it to me, sounds like a blast if theres poker and riding involved. but wouldnt the cards blow out of your hands while your riding

They usually start at a restaurant or bar. You travel a predetermined course stopping at other bars/restaurants along the way where you select a card from a deck at each stop. At the finish you throw down your hand and the person with the best one wins whatever.

I stopped going on poker runs because the guy's would drink at every stop and be legless by the time they got to the end venue.

I have seen some runs where people get *sloshed* also, just don't ride near them and maybe bring a friend of your own... usually you will find a bunch of normal guys that aren't acting like idiots

Sometimes a portion of the pooled money goes to a charity. So the game winner receives some money as does the charity. The excessive drinking and riding would bother me too much to participate. I wouldn't mind doing a Toys for Tots ride someday.

the one i've been on wasnt much of a ride. Philly's annual Toys for Tots ride last fall had 90,000 motorcycles. I actually rode with a group of Vespas at the very end of the group

We got some funny looks, seeing a group of old vespas riding behind 90,000 harleys and various other people who take themselves entirely too seriously.

ANyhow, the experience is pretty much on par with being in a 90,000 vehicle traffic jam for 5 miles. Its not much of an event for actual riding, but more just for the good your doing by giving some kid a toy. Defintly an interesting experience, just dont expect to have a day of good riding or something.

I went on a poker run last fall after riding my 250 honda for about 3 months. It was hosted by a local club that is mostly goldwing riders. We stoped at gas stations, not bars, to draw cards. I ran into a guy with an old honda 750 and we rode together. People left staggered by a few mins with lots of space between riders and we took two lane backroads for 140 miles of easy crusing. I am going to go again this spring when they have another one for sure.

If its too out of control and people are getting drunk you could drop out and just ride back home.
