I'm curious -- where you riding in the center of the lane or in one of the tire strips? I went down just like you described except I didn't even hit the brake hard at all. I was riding smack in the center though and that's what did it -- all that oily stuff that sits there.
Out of curiosity after a small spill like that how did you get the bike home without a shift lever?

Additionally, dude, don't ride around with jagged, broken-off bits from your bike in your pockets. I understand the reasoning, but that can be problematic...
To answer all your questions....I was in the left tire track. I was about to change lanes and was checking my blind spot, there was a car there so I didn't change lanes and then when I turned my head around the car infront of me was stopping. I hit the front brake a little to hard with my front tire every so slightly turned to the left and before I knew what was happening, I was down to that side. I pretty much hit the ground and bouced right back up to my feet.
And my shift knob in my jacket isn't sharp. Its just the rubber knob...it just snapped off the lever. Oh yeah, and this happened like 4 blocks from work so, I pushed it to a side street (talk about embarassing) and then I realized it was probably in gear (2nd or 3rd) and it was so I hopped back on and rode it back to work in one gear. I'm going to transport it to the dealer which is a few blocks away from here the same way later today on my lunch break.

Speaking from experience I'm inclined to agree.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
So the bike is going in Thursday morning to get inspected/fixed. Upon inspection in the daylight today, I think I bent the radiator assembly in the front, I need a new shift lever (the linkage seems fine, it still shifts gears smoothly if you just push the lever with your hand) and the steering head needs to be inspected to make sure I didn't mess that up. The headlight and cowl around it are scraped just a little bit, something that can wait to be fixed. I know the radiator assembly is like 450 bucks, and the shift lever is like 70....does anyone know how much labor is going to be? UGH! This stupid little dump is going to cost some big dough....lesson learned....lesson learned....
