You can easily pick up 10 hp and 12 lb ft of torque by opening your intake, moving the air cleaner to the right side of the bike. You can do that for as little as $20.

Now when you say open up the intake, I'm with you. But moving the air cleaner to the other side? I gotta say...ya' lost me.

Big Vulcans have their throttle bodies mounted on the right side of the engine, but their air filters are on the left. Because of this, they have to breathe through a very restrictive plastic tunnel that runs between the cylinders. Installing an aftermarket air cleaner (or a Caddman Kit) solves this problem.

Hmmm...that's a pretty good chunk of info. That really helps out...

You've got the Jets, Pipes and it looks like you might be altering the Intake.

PLEASE, if there is one in your area, find a place with a dynamometer so you know that the bike is running optimally in all engine speeds!! For ex, if your bike is running fine now (Like consuming about the right abount of gas) drastically freeing up your intake could result in lean running which is particularly bad for the engine.

Even if you can't find a dyno, a garage w/ an exhaust gas analyzer should be able to help you.

I know a good run on the dyno is allways good, just not allways easy to locate. I'm on the search though...

Cruiser-style bikes make their power down low. Lots of torque. You're not going to feel much power when you wind it out.

I'll second that. I did this intake mod to my '99 Drifter 1500 along with installing a K&N filter, Roadhouse 2-1 exhaust system and a remap witha Power Commander. Just a word of caution - the intake runner between the cylinders is destroyed in the removal process, there's no other way to remove it except for dismantling most of the upper half of the motor. But the performance gains more than make up for this minor point.

Also, and perhaps Gadget can back me up on this one, the Drifters's have a steel oil gear as opposed to the (early model year) Vulcan's plastic one which is prone to failure. You might want to make that upgrade while you're mucking about in the engine, along with blanking off the reed valves on the exhaust ports. The Vulcan series are great bikes and the engines are pretty much bulletproof, although they are somewhat noisy. The bike should give you years of trouble-free service.

BTW, have you joined VROC?
