Actually WinMX and LimeWire are P2P but the searches you conduct are run through a central server, or series of servers in which a log is kept of those that logon to the service, when you send out a request the server pings those that are connected and asks if they have the file, you then get a list of people with the file and can choose who to download from. Meaning it can eventually be shutdown.

Bitorrent doesn't work that way.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
