How long does a bike last?
Re: How long does a bike last?
If a bike is properly taken care of, how long can it last until you need to get another one? Is there an approximate mileage that it is unsafe to ride past? Or is it just that most people keep newer bikes around because it's a lot cheaper to get a bike than a car?
It lasts as long as well as you take care of it.

Shoot. BMW's are just starting to run FINE at 60-80K miles.
A number of folks in my local BMW club make 40K miles a YEAR on their BMWs... which are often over ten years old.
They don't call them "Flying Bricks" for nothing. Not the top in style, but solid, well made machines.

I think the upside is the bikes are mostly water cooled (no hot spots in the cyl) and have automotive like oiling/filtering systems.
I've been told by various shops that 150k miles before rebuild out of a sport bike is quite possible as long as the owner does not think he is a road racer ie bouncing off the rev limiter all the time. Then you are into racing style maintanance of the weekly rebuild or watch it fail.

... I would never buy a benz. My buddy's dad went through 7 transmissions on his under warranty, and he definitely doesn't push it hard. Finally got a lemon law order to make them buy the car back from him.
A guy I work with had the same problem... the transmissions like to fail in the middle of traffic.
