1982 GS650L First Bike

Just got my first bike and am ready to have years of fun with it, a 1982 Suzuki GS650L. I'm pretty handy on autos but new to bike repair. Unfortunately my bike didn't come with the manual and there are none on ebay right now, etc.. Does anyone know of one in electronic form or someone willing to scan one in for me? That would be appreciated, right now I'm a little lost on a few things I need to tinker with. Here's a pic of it:

Look on Amazon.com , they probably have a service manual available. Cheaper then e-bay probably.

Congrats on the new (old) bike. I started on a 1983 GS650GL (the shaft drive cruiser style with the small tank)



They are very reliable, fairly bulletproof bikes. As far as a manual goes, your local dealer should be able to get you a Clymer Manual for your bike. I'd sell you mine, but I like to keep all my manuals, just in case. You can also order a manual directly from Clymer. You want the sixth one down from the top.

Just a question. On the Clymer site it lists the following for the manual you pointed out for me:

GS650EX, GS650EZ, GS650GLZ, GS650GLD, GS650GX, GS650GD, GS650GZ, GS650GLX and GS650ED

I have the GS650L. I have looked extensively on the internet and a lot of time in my search for the manual, I come across many models from '82 but not the L model. Is the 650L equivalent to one of those other model numbers or is it just so close to one of them that the book would work. If it is close to one of them, which model is it close to so that on future parts scavenging missions I will know what I can look for. Thanks for all the help and the respone BTW. I still am looking for the owner's manual, I've been told it has areas superior to the Clymer manual. I'd like to have both.

Yours would be the GS650GLZ

The last letter is the year code. My particular bike, for example, was a GS650GLD. The sidecovers had 'GS650L' on them. The full code for your bike can be found on the information stamp on the right (left?) side of the steering tube, printed on a metal plate.

I got the exact same bike about this time last year. It took me well over 4 months to find an owners manual, clymers manual, and Suzuki shop maintence manual for this bike.

I got the owners and clymer's manual off ebay. The shop manual I ordered from some guy on the 'net. Lemme see if I still got his e-mail....searching...

I found the owner's manual and the clymer book for the '82 GS650. Thanks for everyone's help. I am going to scan both into PDF's for anyone in the future looking for them so they don't have to jump through the hoops I did. It is getting harder and harder to find these things each year that passes. In a couple of weeks from the date on this post I should have them scanned in, so anyone looking, message me for the PDF. Good call on the scan. I should do that for the shop manual I have, but alas, I have no scanner. It is not in the forseeable future that I get one either.

About a year ago I bought a 79 GS750L. I have really enjoyed this bike, once I got the kinks out of the carbs. Mine is chain drive however. I like the look of the L series that Suzuki had in the late 70's and early 80's. They ride simular to todays cruisers, although the center of gravity is a bit higher, than todays V twins. I will post a picture when I have figured out how to do that. Any help with posting?
