locking your bike

How do you lock your bike when you go out? I can't carry the heavy chain with me, and I heard disk locks are useless (is that true?). What do you guys do?

I engage the fork lock and make sure my insurance is paid up.

That's what I do. Well, almost, but I don't have insurance that covers theft. If I'm just going to be in a store for 10 minutes, that's all I bother doing. If it's going to be parked in an unsecure location for a long period of time, I bring my big U-lock and lock it to something sturdy.

I don't lock mine up either, just the fork lock. I always hear that people who go out looking to steal bikes can cut through any lock in a matter of minutes anyway so F it.

You have the added protection built into the buell, if yours is like my friend's, it only goes a day or so before the wiring flakes out again and it has to go back to the shop. I'm not sure what model it is, but it's still in his garage unridden, it stranded him too many times and Harley said they couldn't fix it.

Yuk yuk yuk... I know many guys who have had no problems with their Buell

Mine is an 04 XB12S... so far trouble free

I did hear older Buells (earlier than 2004) had problems tho... what year/model does your friend have?

I think that is the same model and even the same year.

Well... since they have 2 year warranties I would have to say your friend is a MORON for letting a dealer say they can not fix it within the 2 year warranty time frame. Maybe you should give him a lemon law lesson...

This is just my opinion... and I guess any protection is better than nothing... but here is the problem with "alarms". How many times have you heard a car alarm siren? Probably every day right? Did you ever even look in the direction of the car or wander over to see if someone was stealing it? At the mall, in front of stores, parking lots and even the office building where I work, I hear car alarms going off for sometimes up to 30 minutes before anyone even mentions it... and most of the time (at least at work) someone will finally investigate only because they are sick of hearing it go off... if a few guys roll up and throw your bike in the back of a pickup truck and ride off with that alarm on the wheel yelling I doubt anyone will even take notice. That said... now... if you have $75 bux to spend on the disk lock why not go for it, there is a chance it might deter someone.
