Picking out my first motorcycle.
I'm looking to purchase my first motorcycle. I'm 27, 6'2'' in height, and weigh anywhere from 200 to 230 pounds. I want a sport bike that is not so powerful that I'll kill myself, but not so weak that it feels like I'm riding a miniature bicycle. I don't want to spend more than $3000 on my first bike. I've ridden dirt bikes here and there, and that is about the extent of my motorcycling experience. So, two questions: What is a good bike for my specifications, and are there any good online retailers from which to purchase said bike?

First off I doubt you'll wanna buy your first bike "online." Only way I know of to do that is ebay. Stick with what works, dealerships, newspaper classified's, or online classified's.
Check
www.craigslist.com
www.cycletrader.com
If you want a sports bike for that kind of money your best bet is to find a used Kawasaki EX500 or a Sukuki GS500. Both have plenty of power to learn on but not so much as to be difficult to control. It really shouldn't even be too terribly hard to find one for $3000 or less.

Re: Picking out my first motorcycle.
1st motorcycle, you definately want to sit on a couple and feel them out. I wouldn't blindly buy one online.
I would also suggest taking the MSF course. Riding a dirt bike here and there is a good start, but the course will teach you alot more especially about emergency situations.
Good luck and have fun with it.
As far as this is concerned, it's more about skill level than the bikes speed. You can easily kill your self on anything. Granted going with a smaller bike is a good start.Prechrysler wrote: I want a sport bike that is not so powerful that I'll kill myself, but not so weak that it feels like I'm riding a miniature bicycle.

the bike you want is a Kawasaki Ninja 500R. you described it perfectly with your descrption of what you want.
A used Ninja 500 can easily be found for under 3 grand.
the ninja 500 is a sportbike that is comfortable to ride and forgiving enough for someone to learn on, but it has enough power that you wont get bored with it in a few months

Thinking of this, assuming it isn't sold:

What do y'all think?
