Not that it matters but this is North Jersey, near the river about 30 miles north of Trenton.
I live right near montclair/newark so this is south for me, not that it matters . I have to admit that I have become a little more apprehensive about the whole thing as of late. It just seems drivers around here (NJ/NYC) are nuts, like really crazy, like they TRY to hurt you. I signed up for MSF and still plan to ride, but all these stories made me stop and take pause!
Absorb as much of the training as you can, practise a lot, wear all the gear all the time, watch all the traffic around you and you still might be killed.
But then something like 9 people die every Christmas testing 6 volt batteries on their tongue checking they have charge.
The only person looking out for your safety on the road is you, as long you resolve to do everything you can to avoid becoming a statistic you should have nothing to worry about.

Is this true?
Are we talking lantern batteries, or is this more like 6v lead/acid batteries in a scenario where the soon to be deceased flips the battery over to get the terminals near their tongue and sulfuric acid dumps into their mouth?
I know it is a little off topic but I'm curious.....
Within reason, the worry (healthy concern) is part of doing everything you can to avoid becoming a statistic... just don't let it go irrational.
Fortean Times collected together a whole book of freaky deaths a while ago. The 9v battery thing was one of the entries that stuck in my mind.
Acutal evidence for it, rather than anecdotal is a bite short on the ground but considering all the other stupid ways people choose to die I can believe it.
In Florida especially Miami, snow birds dont have to be in town for there to be bad drivers! My favorite are the petite women driving these HUGE Hummers and SUV's lost in the streets and ON THE CELL PHONE. The best advice about riding motorcycles I heard here, drive like they are out to kill you.

Hmmm. When I was a kid, that's the way I used to test 9v batteries. A quick swipe across the tounge would do the trick. It wasn't pleasant, but I can't believe it would be deadly. Now that I'm all grown up (sort of), I use a voltmeter.
I did learn about a unique property of 9v batteries the other day. I had one in my pocket and quickly found out what happens when a coin shorts across the poles. I was sitting in a restaurant and I felt the heat just about the time I noticed my pants were smoking
I still do the lick test on batteries. You can daisy-chain the 9v's together to produce deadly voltage, I once made a 90v battery that way to power an old tube portable radio. Accidentally grabbed both ends, man that was nasty.
