there has not beeen a 2 stroke streetbike available new in the US since the late 70s, there were a few yamaha RD and RZ bikes in the US during the 80s but they sold poorly and are impossible to find used.

not true at all.
I know in California they can't sell two strokes, but in every other state they can. They dont make two stroke street bikes anymore, but they do make two stroke scooters. One example is a Stella:
I'm pretty sure(not positive) that you could buy RD-350LC's('80-'82) in the states as well as the RZ-350 for a few years after that. When the RZ-500's came out, we got them in Canada, but they couldn't in the States.
Scooters fall under a slightly different set of rules so you can still buy them there if they are under a certain displacement..... but that's just me thinkin' again....
aside from scooters the last 2 stroke street bike I know of that was sold in the US was the RZ350 in the early 80s. The RZ350s engine still lives in the frame of the Yamaha Banshee ATV, a lot nastier sounding than the typical 2 stroke
