Anyone use a decent fairly cheap website hosting service? And any clue who hosts TMW?

The first place to check is with your own ISP .
And of course it all depends what your needs are and what your intentions are , as well .

Most ISP's offer a decent and free "personal" website package for their subscribers. Verizon offers up to 10 gb of space if I remember correctly.

If you're looking at a business site, I really haven't looked into that too much.

I recently got a "free" service from godaddy when I renewed my ".com" site. Their prices are decent and, the site hosting seems ok so far. I haven't actually uploaded anything to it yet but; I got an email, frontpage extensions and 5gb of space just for renewing through them. Also some other extras that I haven't fully explored.

The ISP hosting is sub-par at best.
I'd like decent storage (200+ Mb), high transfer (2Gb+), and at least a few eMail addresses (for contacting webmaster).

Though, i JUST wrestled with Apache 2.0.55 and kicked it's "O Ring". This way i can start work on a site and see what it looks like and actually run .php, .pl, etc. files without netscape trying to download it. AND if i can figure out how to make the router send any/all HTTP requests to MY computer, i may forgo web hosting and just get a domain linked to my IP.

If i can figure that out, i forsee free image hosting on my computer for TMW members.

After i figure out a php script of somesort that does FTP from server side with user accounts and stuff. Or just set up /~user folders.

Oh man I've missed this kind of "poo poo". Computers/internet stuff was my first obsession.

I use Dream Host, and they've been absolutely great.

I use this option.

Your Account Provides:

23080 MB Disk (Grows 160 MB / week)
1136 GB BW per Cycle (Grows 8 GB / week)

I paid $190 for a 2 year subscription. They have other plans however.

Here's the link to GoDaddy's Hosting Plans. Like I said before, I don't know how they compare to other places. I've always just used my ISP's personal website plans up until GoDaddy sent me the freebie offer. The free hosting is the Economy Plan but, you only get one email (as far as I could find so far). I'm not sure about any other differences yet.

I have had poor experiences with GoDaddy. Horrible customer service.

That said, I use Omnis.com. For about $15 a month you will have 2gb storage, 200gb data transfer, unlimited emails, full php/cgi/database, etc (though Windows server is more expensive if you need asp).

Their service is also very reliable.

Freebies are okay...but you get what you pay for (and you usually end up with advertising on your site that you are not getting paid for).

Thanks for the warning about godaddy CNF. I'll keep a look out. I figured I might as well take advantage of what they're offering. Simply testing some things out with it for now.

Godaddy is cheap so if thats what you're looking for, its not bad if you dont need to rely on the server for anything. A URL and some cheap webspace is all it gives you, with email of course.

My horrible experience with them was that I set up a message board on my site. Phpbb.com has an option to where you can choose to recieve emails when someone responds to a thread you are subscribed to. Needless to say the traffic was increasing heavily and people were very active on the boards and people were adjusting their settings so they would get email notices. AOL was flagging emails from my boards as spam automatically, and apparently the AOL users did not bother or know they needed to adjust their settings (as I had several conversations with my AOL users)...SO, AOL sent a warning to GoDaddy that I was running a "Email Marketing Campaign" out of my site

Of course GoDaddy blocked the site, and held it for ransom for around $300 for reactivation. When I explained the situation to the person on the phone, they were unsympathetic and actually blamed me for the AOL users (how shall I say) lack of sense, not to mention AOL's ridiculous spam policy that at this point (and honestly is probably their goal) only accepts email from other AOL users, or of course big companies that pay AOL to bypass the filters and deliver certified spam right to your box.

And, the customer service rep sounded like some kid in his basement. I called twice and went online to verify the number because I honestly though I'd been hacked and it was a scam.
