I love Ferrets! I had a ferret in college. He was the best...never cage them though, they should have cages to retreat to and for their food but its cruel to confine those wonderful animals...they really are more like cats than anything. If let free they will need multiple litter boxes though (they will show you where to put them! - ferrets can be litter trained with patience but they do not take to it naturally like cats do), and you need to give them a bath once a week (no more and no less!). Males are preferred as females will go in heat (only males are neutered) but they always come descented.
They can be great pets and will bond better with you with a single ferret as long as you play with them every day and give them lots of attention (they'll also adjust to your sleeping schedule and sleep with you at night).
People say they bite, but ferrets only bite when they are scared...and they CAN bite. The solution is not to panic and pull your finger out as that can hurt their teeth, just soothingly calm them and pet them and they will let go within seconds.
Not good around young children. I would say 13+.
My ferret also loved college parties but after a few capfuls of wine he was pretty drunk

Our "child" is an 11 year old dalmation named Cinder-Ella. I haven't uploaded any of her recent photos but, when you click on her name above, it will take you to a webpage I made a few years ago. Lots of pictures of her there.
