First service?

#1 Unread post by nyrblue35 »

what basically needs to be done? i have a new vstrom which is fuel injected.
the manual just calls for an throttle body inspection at 1000 miles even though the dealer says to get a 600 mile first service. i can change oil, lube the chain/tighten if needed but what else do they really do before i start calling local suzuki dealers.? they get around $200-up by me.

also, what are your thoughts on break in and when(if desired) to switch to synthetic? from what ive read it seems like i might go with synthetic around 1500 miles possibly 2000. i just dont really trust dealers like alot of people and im overcautious about getting ripped off. im changing the oil for the first time tomorrow(250 miles) and im assuming ill have some metal in the pan.

All they do during the initial service is fluid changes, chain adjustments, and bolt torque checks - all of which can be done easily at home.

As far as the oil, switch to synthetic at any time. If you're concerned about break in, wait until the second change.

that's weird.

my break-in maintenance at 600 miles require more than just an oil change.

anyway, we have different bikes but checking everything you can check is always good.

my mechanic actually inspected everything except the engine valves when i brough it to him for my break in maintenance.

regarding synthetic oil... i met a salesrep from cycle gear that said he was in a meeting w/ a castrol higher up. the castrol guy said that new engines by suzuki and probably the other big 3 JP bike makers run their engines hard and break it in before they even put the frame.

so he said it's ok to run synthetic even from the start.

i dunno if i believe him. but anyway... i already got more than 2000 miles so next oil change, i'll have full sysnthetic on my bike.

interesting because a friend i was talking to the other day mentioned the same thing about a pre-broken in engine. who knows if its really true though.....

Don't allow any dealer to touch ur bike, they will either sabotage it or rob good parts off of it and install bad parts, you can change ur own oil. Yes use synthetic, the best is Amsoil at 2000 miles, and the dealer may tell you a BS story like if you don't have them service the bike it may void ur warranty, and if he tells you synthetic oil will ruin your bike he's full of it too, he only wants to make money by selling his own brand of cheap oil at a rip off price, and he knows when you use synthetic you will have less engine problems and he will be out ripping you off on a big repair bill. Before you switch to synthetic measure the bikes top speed, then wait about 100 miles after you switch to synthetic and measure the top speed again, you will notice between 5 to 20 mph higher top speed. After you see for yourself that im right, ask me, I will explain to you why ur top speed increased. ( Only is you use Amsoil )
