I am all for that law!! There are way too many people without proper training around here. I've been to some of the local forums, and kids are riding without any kind of license or permit. I also think they should require insurance for bike purchases.... I don't see why it isn't required.

Those two things by themselves would prevent a lot of dangerous people from getting on the road. Or at least force them to be less dangerous before they do get a bike.

They would only prevent them from getting on the road "legally", I doubt it would have much of an impact on illegal riding, it's already illegal to ride without the endorsment and some still do it.

My point is, it wouldn't hurt. It would stop those people from buying new bikes and then crashing them. I know it wouldn't stop everyone, but that is impossible anyway. All you can do is try to promote the safest approach.

I still can't see why people shouldn't be able to buy without proof of endorsement. I've owned a motorcycle for years. Never had an endorsement. Never had a learners permit. Never rode the motorcycle on the street (or off for that matter...it's too big for a 1st bike). There are many businesses (e.g. rental companies, MSF schools, etc) that would need loophole exceptions. And anyway it wouldn't help. In CA you need proof of insurance to register or renew registration on a motor vehicle, yet some people estimate as many as 1/3rd of motor vehicles on the road are uninsured.

It is a stupid knee-jerk reaction.

Worse, it is a counterproductive knee-jerk reaction. All it will do is harass responsible people without protecting the idiots.

Here in British Columbia you could buy any bike or car that you want. But you would not legally be allowed to ride/drive without insurance. And you cannot get insurance without a valid driving permit, leaners or experienced.

It doesn't matter how much education is out there; there will always be people who think they are invincible.
Why else would so many young people still choose to start smoking, get drunk or use illegal drugs? Because they are curious, cave in to peer pressure, and think that because adults tell them it's lame.
There will always be people like that. Young, middle age and older.

She chose to break the law.......argueing over which knee-jerk response to go with is a moot-point. If she broke one law she would find a way around another. The last thing I want to do is dick around getting approvals every time I buy a bike 'cause another idiot did something stupid. There are people out there determined to do stupid things. We already have laws in place to prevent them from hurting others. They are not always followed and never will be. Down with more red-tape!

stories like this dont even phase me, her first day riding, she does 100, isnt wearing any gear. maybe shell learn a lesson and not be a stupid Biotch

The law should be that you can't get a plate for a bike unless you have an motorcycle endorsement (and maybe insurance), and that you are liable if you let a rider without an MC endorsement ride your plated bike.

Buying a bike to putter around in parking lots or back roads is fine. If you're going to be on the road (i.e., if you're going to want a plate to not be pulled over every day), you should have to show you can ride.

Perfect solution, no. People will swap plates, steal plates...but I think it is more in line with keeping people accountable for reckless actions than just for owning a bike.
