Not that I'm into scare tactics, but it's good to know what can potentially go wrong......

This gives a whole new meaning to the term "speed kills".

See the Motorcycle?

A picture is worth a thousand words.

The Honda rider was traveling at such a "very high speed", his reaction time was not
sufficient enough to avoid this accident. Swedish Police estimate a speed of ~250 KM/h (155mph)
before the bike hit the slow moving car side-on at an intersection. At that speed, they predicted
that the rider's reaction time (once the vehicle came into view) wasn't sufficient enough for him to
even apply the brakes. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car
with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 10 feet from
where the collision took place.

All three involved (two in car and rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was
placed at the Stockholm Motorcycle Fair by the Swedish Police and Road Safety Department.

The sign above the display also noted that the rider had only recently obtained his license.

At 250 KM (155 mph) the operator is traveling at 227 feet per second. With normal reaction time
to SEE-DECIDE-REACT of 1.6 seconds the above operator would have traveled over 363 feet while
making a decision on what actions to take. In this incident the Swedish police indicate that no actions were taken.

Hrm... I don't see the big deal... I can find 100s or 1000s or maybe even 1000000s of pictures of fatal car crashes from someone speeding.

okay my bike only tops out at ~100mph so this is one thing I don't have to worry about.

But we complain about stupid cagers, well this time its a crazy donkey biker and the poor victim cagers. Its goes both ways.

Yes, but situations where the biker is at fault, and a cager is hurt, are rare. And like earwig said, there are thousands of videos/pics you can find of car accidents because of speeding.

Yeah, this is not a fake story, but it is a reconstructed accident. You'll notice it is on display here, and not the actual accident scene. You can see the car would have to be cut up to remove the dead.

And on the topic of seeing an accident as a "teacher" - not really valid. Those who would be concerned are concerned. Those who have not been taught before they saw the picture will not learn. We are at war in a way - the war against those who are careless and would make us lose our bikes. Stupid accidents, scared cagers, loud pipes, smoking tires, all lead to the majority, (that would be those who don't ride) hating those of us who do. If the majority decides we are enough of a threat, you won't be riding your bike for fun, even in careful manner. Your quiet bike, safe habits, and courteous demeanor are useless - if the a cager just watched a guy pop a wheelie on the highway, or saw and smelled a biker smoke his tires next to his outdoor seating at a restaurant, or if he read a story about the upturn in accident with untrained bikers.

And finally this thought - we have more video, pictures, and news than ever in history. I've seen the story in this thread about 5 times in the past two years. Technology has gotten more data than we can process. But is that a good thing? Even if less bad happens in the world we wouldn't know it since the media is always hunting for more. If they can't find something cool to show (explosion, fire, dead people...) they dig out and old story. We rarely see video or news about good things anymore, so the view would be the world is worse, even if it was better. We wouldn't know it.

Good to know what can potentially go wrong?! Yeah, it shows what can go wrong if you're riding anything too fast and not being a good rider. So it doesn't scare me - unless I'm a cager and that maniac is heading in for a T-bone! Too bad people have to be so careless.

j/k very sad for all involved.

today i was driving my cage, at the speed limit, and a guy on a bike turned across in front of me and i had to slam on the brakes not to clip him. i had the right of way- i was going straight through an intersection and had a solid green light. i thought that was kinda dumb, i saw the biker and i know he saw my BRIGHT blue truck. oh well. i hope he jut made a mistake, 3 riders have already died this "season".
