That weight is very reasonable for somone his height. Just sit you're self on some bikes and see which feels better to you. Check out the GS500 or the SV650 if you are concerned.
Hey Matt (thanks), I'm just concerned about getting a 250cc & not having enough juice to haul me around. I don't think I want to get anything 600cc+ as my first bike as I have never even sat on one!!
Well it takes a mature mind to understand not all bikes are equal when you begin. You will have no problems with a 250cc bike. I would however veer toward leiniency and say you would be better off with a 500cc bike not because of any weight factor, but because personally I myself feel them more suited for highway travel.
You also may want to find a nice used night hawk to kick around on. Great lookers and also excelent reliability as well. Very forgiving to boot and would be in my top 3 as an excelent starter bike. Heck if you're like me and not a speed demon and just out having a good time theres no reason you can't make that you're perminant bike (or any other).
edit: Oh and verm... Bad joke. I myself being a skinny one don't know first hand but there is no reason to make jokes like that. That just shows immiturity.

I agree, I think the nighthawk is a perfect starter bike, my 450 has a lot of power, but not enough that I'm going to put myself at unneccesary risk.
