Battery Question

#1 Unread post by jdp »

Just picked up a Free 1970 Honda Trail 90 cc.
Battery is dead.
My question is, Will these old bikes start and stay running without a battery?

If not, please explain why.
Thanks, JP

no, because the battery is in a series curcuit between the stator and the ign coil, AND you need the higher capacity voltage from the battery to start it. the stator doesn't move fast enough when ur turning the engine over with a kick starter, AND when the stator is moving slow it will NEVER produce enough power to power the coil. after the engine starts and the engine is running the stator will produce a higher voltage and amps to power the coil and to charge the battery. I hope I explainned that and answered all the other questions you were going to ask, your stuck buying a battery for it. Before you do buy a battery check and make sure ur stator is good, you could use jummper cables from a car battery to start it, if it starts make sure you check and make sure its charging, old Honda's are noted for bad, cheap stators that go bad. To check the stator you will need a VOM Meter, if its running check the charging by DC Volts range and its reading anything higher than battery volts, if its not running remove the 2 wires from the stator and set the VOM Meter to resistance RX1 if its good you should have low resistance, if its open, its bad, also check each wire to ground to make sure its open, if ur reading something to ground its bad, shorted. If you stator is bad maybe you can take it to a person that rebuilds starters and he can rewind it for you and it may be cheaper than buying a new one.

I don't recommend jumping any motorcycle off a with a car. But if it's necessary....Do not have the car running. Seen many things fry!

Jumping a 6V CT90 with a 12V system is a very bad idea.
