I have an 1980 CX500 custom. I had it stored and my buddy who rode it last and put it away put it away , left the tank on gas 1/4 full. Went to get it and it wouldnt run. replaced the plugs, cleaned the carbs, and drained the fuel and replaced with new gas. I did all that and it would rev up. I give it gas and it would just die. so i tore the carbs the apart again and recleaned the jets. Put it all back together again, and started it up gave it gas and it died. I started adjusting the air/fuel adjustment screws and now it'll let me give it gas, but it'll bog down then race up. if i take it for a ride it'll studder then race away. Any ideas as what i am doing wrong or how to adjust the carbs better?? I cant figure it out and want to get out and ride so i can save gas money. thank you in advance for your help........ the air filter is new and box is clean in case your wondering. Plugs are gapped as well. thank you
Spend the money and let a dealership clean the carbs. Make sure the intake boots are not dry-rotted. Drain fuel Tank and check for rust since it only had 1/4 tank. Replace plugs.
Dealership should charge you 2 - 3 hours to clean.
Had the carbs cleaned, changed the battery and have been feeding redex fuel suppliment through the system.
Its running now and after a long run it gets better but is still having issues up to 4,000rpm
Dosnt feel like it is really kicking in. After being run for a while it has more life to it and behaves a lot more like it should be doing.
Even then though it is having fuelling problems - little bursts of unexpected power, some of them when I am using engine braking to bring it to slow it down.
Try running Yamaha Combustion Chamber Cleaner through the intake manifold vacuum hose or screw inlet. Read instructions on can. Also you can try and add Yamaha Ring Free or Amsoil Fuel Additive to clean carbon off of intake valves. Leak-Down test will show you if this is the problem. When was last valve adjustment??
Valves havnt been adjusted since i bought the bike over 4 years ago. They started to tick at the end of last year when i put it away. i was planning on tearing the heads off to adjust them this week. Could that be part of the problem? i thought that was another problem in itself. My uncle and i were supossed to do a complete tear down and rebuild of the bike this summer but he died of a heart attack a few months ago, and now i dont know anyone who knows bikes. so please bear with me as i am trying to get this thing running better so i can still ride something for him, i know he would want me to ride even if he wasnt riding next to me on his bike. thanks again.
First, sorry about the passing of your uncle, and I think its great you are still going to ride for him.
About the valves--I have an '81 CX500. I did the valve adjustments for the first time this past weekend. Not too hard if you are patient and keep adjusting and readjusting while tightening the locking nuts on the valve.
But here is my caution, which you may already know (I have had the bike only a month, and am currently a sub-amateur mechanic at best). When you are putting the valve covers back on, do not torque the bolts for the covers very much past finger-tight. In an agonizing few moments, I realized after the fact that I had sheared TWO of my valve cover bolts by overtightening them. If I had paid more attention, I would have realized that with the metal collar just above the threads and the rubber seal at the top that these bolts were meant to go in lightly.
In any case, as proof that there is a God who is merciful on riders, the same day I sheared the two bolts (Friday), some fella in WA started parting out a CX500 on eBay. I bought the valve covers, gaskets, and (whew...) bolts. I should have them tomorrow and be able to ride again, because I have not been able to satisfactorily rig up replacement bolts. Further divine intervention-- I was able to easily back out the broken bolt ends with a set of Craftsman EZouts.
Good luck with it. Sorry I can't address your other problems, I only know what I read/troubleshoot from my Clymer's manual.
