Opinions: Leaving a 300 dollars hanging by a chinstrap

I have seen alot of bikers leave their helmets on their handlebars. I have a cargo net that I keep it under. But I am paranoid about just hanging the helmet off my bike. I don't know why. I sometimes feel really paranoid and take my helmet with me.

It's just I paid so much for it and it seems so easy to steal.

I was hoping to fish for some opinions and see if anyone has ever really had their helmet stolen. Maybe I am nuts?

I lock mine with the little locky hook thing under the seat. But I do see alot of people leaving their helmets on the seat or handle bars as well, so I guess depending how crime riden your area is, it probably isnt a big thing. its not like its a wallet, its not an easily cashable item IMO.

it may not be an 'easily cashable item' but depending on the helmet laws in your area, it could quite easily leave you stranded with no way to get home.

I just picked up a cable lock on Friday so I could lock my helmet and jacket, as well as the gf's gear to my bike while we wandered around the mall. It was just too damn hot out to be carrying everything around. my sidecases restrict access to my bike's helmet lock, and it would be kind of pointless to only lock one helmet up and leave everything else loose.

Is there a large market for used helmets?

I bought a small cable lock for a bicycle. It's got a 4-number combination on it so I don't need to carry around(or lose) another key. I just run it through my frame and through the bottom/out the visor of my helmet then just hang the helmet on my handlebar.

I once left my helmet on my seat while I walked into a gas station. It was out of my sight for about 1 minute. When I came out my nice multi-colored Shoei was history. This was in a town of 1500 that I lived in at the time.

Now, if I don't take it with me I run a cable through the chin bar and cable it to the bike.

FYI some idiots will cut the chin strap to steal a helmet hanging from the bikes helmet lock. Makes sense. Now no one can use it.
I would be the old, slow guy. Just let me know where you are going and I'll try to get there before you leave.

I have a small helmet lock. If I'm just running into the store for something quick though I'll just put it on the bar.

Someone might steal it, but I dont think its likely. Used helmets are pretty worthless, not many people would buy them and no one would pay much for it.
