Big guy.. first bike.. help!

#1 Unread post by PWNDLOL »

Hey all I would like to get into motorcycling but I have got a couple of questions. Im a pretty big guy. (6'4-6'5 , 290 lbs) This leaves me to believe that alot of the bikes people would recommend would simply not fit me considering they are pretty small. I like all three kinds of bikes but I like the sport ones the most, however the ones I could comforable sit on were really fast + expensive. (busa ect.) I also like the regular sports bikes, I went and sat on a Bandit 1200 today and it fit pretty good but I dont know if that could support my weight. I also was looking at the cruisers and they were nice. I sat on a boulevard c50 (800cc) and really likes it but im not sure it could go too fast. Im not saying I need a really fast bike but I would like something that could get to 90-100 mph or so and be able to maintain that. I think the c50 would struggle that fast. I really dont know what engine sizes mean either. Basically im looking for something that could fit me and wouldnt be so slow I would want to upgrade 2 months later and need to upgrade later. The guy at the dealer recommended the bandit because he said it could do 100 all day long and was pretty tall. (It did fit me pretty good) and best of all in my price range which will be under 5,000. I would like a sports bike but I seem to think they are made for smaller people and I would barely fit on a gsx-r 1000. (plus they are close to 9,000 dollars)
Anyone have any advice or recomendations?

First of all.....
:welcome:

Second, Have you checked out the Beginner's Guide? There are also stickies and the Learn To Ride A Motorcycle page which is now downloadable in PDF format (Created and maintained by Dragonhawk).

Third, I also recommend an MSF course and reviewing your state’s (province’s/territory’s) DMV or DOT website for licensing information, guidelines and FAQ.

Fourth, Go to a variety of dealers and sit on all kinds of different motorcycles. Even if you don’t think you’d like the ride when you look at it. I was dead set on one riding style when I started and ended up buying a different type. You may surprise yourself as well.

Fifth, Good Luck and Have Fun! I hope you enjoy this site! Be sure to...:spreadtheword:

Grab a KLR650. Stay away from the liter+ inline 4s.

The Bandit 1200 is a nice bike... I came across a used one that was plenty cheap and in very good condition. It is FAR from a beginner's bike. I'll probably have one whenever I find a really good deal...but right now I'm having plenty of fun with a bike that produces 1/3rd the HP.

I dont know about that KLR650. It looks like a dirt bike. Cruisers seem to be the most comfortable to me probably because im tall. But something about the SIZE of that bandit would be nice too. Any more suggestions?

KLR650 is sort of dirtbike lookin I guess... ;)

Don't like that? Try the V-Strom 650 then. It looks a fair amount like the Bandit in some ways. Want a cruiser style? They're all about the same. You will probably want to replace the seat or move the controls around after you've ridden a bit... that's all aftermarket stuff though.

I've sat on a lot of bikes and the only one I can truely say was "not going to work for me" was the rebel 250 (handlebars hit my knees). They're all a bit different but I haven't found one that was really uncomfortable. I just had to sit differently. You might have the knee problem with more bikes depending on how your body is proportioned.

I can figure out what fits me by sitting on bikes, im more concerned about what bikes suspension ect. could support my 295lbs body. Also get me up to speed. I dont want a bike that when all my friends are cruising at 80 on the turnpike that im straggling behind at 60 trying to keep up. =D

They'll all carry you and more.

If you have 40HP or more you can ride with anyone who is going a legal speed. If you want to be able to match acceleration with them, buy the same bike they have. More HP may or may not equal more fun in the short run. (Long run is a different issue.:))

Ok so that helped alot, so if I could fit comforbly on it.. I could buy something like a gsx-r 600 which im sure is fast enough and it would hold me too. So just as long as it not CRAZY fast for my first one and I can fit on it ok.

I don't think yuo'd fit a GSX-R comfortably, I'm 5'8" and 120lbs and it fits me about right.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
