face shield and misc questions:

I just purchased a tinted shield today. I don't like wearing sunglasses under my helmet and my eyes HATE sunlight.

I ride to work during the day and go home at night. So I'll have to switch shields before I leave for work.

Does anyone make a special "bag" to store my other shield in, so it doesn't get scratched up?

Also, what do you guys use to clean your shields? I have been using glass cleaner with a paper towel on my clear one but I don't want to scratch up the mirror finish on my tinted shield. Is there a better alternative?

And 2 misc. questions. I've ordered a shop service manual from my Kawi dealer but until then:

I'll assume that the swingarm pivot and steering head use bearings, and they don't need/are not designed to be lubed. Is this correct? The bike is an '03 EX500.

Don't use paper products (paper towels) to clean your face shield. It will make lots of microscopic scratchest that will eventually build up and make the shield cloudy. Use cloth, like a linen wash cloth or something.

Most shops have visor pouches available. They run about $15. I've got two. They're made of wet suit material...

An "orphan" tube sock will work, but isn't quite as protective.

I use dish soap and a sponge, dry with a dish towel. I can't tell I've got a visor in front of me after it's cleaned.

Don't use glass cleaner. I find it leaves a film.

The best thing to clean your shield is plain water and a soft cotton cloth. Wet the cloth and lay it over the shield. In a few minutes the bugs will lift right off. Dry with soft cotton cloth and you get to go get it dirty again.
I use this method and my shields last for years.

To carry the visor they make special bags that are pretty cheap... check out something like this: http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=1& ... em=MRX_VB1 or google: helmet visor bag or go to a motorcycle dealer... most of them carry these or something similar.

As far as cleaning the visor, I use sandpaper. Just kidding... if you can get your hands on eyeglass cleaner pads use them they work perfect. When I run out of them and my "hook up" can't steal some from the eye doctor for me I use a soft towel and water.

I use wetnaps to clean mine. I keep a handful under the seat. Along with some zipties.

zipties are like ductape, you never know when your gonna need it

Zipties are more like a condom, you don't always need it, but you really don't want to be in a situation where you need one and don't have it.

Case in point, on my last ride my friend had his license plate fall off, whirling shard of metallic death at 100kmh. His bolts were gone, but ZIPTIES to the rescue. Ziptied that mother back on, and away we went.

It held up for the whole ride despite very strong gusting winds (in excess of 70kmh)
