how hard is it to do an engine rebuild

Even if he bought the used engine, do you think he'd be able to install it by himself? If he can't just buy a shop manual, and do some simple deductive reasoning, I doubt he'll be able to jump to swapping engines. But hey, there's a chance he could do it.

Wow, I just peed myself reading all this silly crap. I like your idea that you snapped a ring because of a bolt that came loose from your engine side cover. WTF does that even mean??????????????????

Perhaps the missing bolt was attached to the suspect piston ring

There's a few nuts and bolts loose alright...they're just not on the bike
