help identifying motor and builder

first off let me say hello, i'm new to the forum. i'm working on a customers bike, trying to find the original builder, would the vin number help, and who would i talk to about it. also the motor doesn't have the size on it, and the block just has a n "M lightning bolt P" on it can anyone please help

Welcome to the forum.

What sort of configuration is the motor?

BSA manufactured the Lightning (2 carb) and Thunderbolt (single carb) 650cc, parallel twin motor. Late 1960's to early 1970’s.

I don't recall there being anything along the lines of "M lightning bolt P" stamped on them though.

Could you post a picture of it?

its actually a custom chopper, s&s components, they think it was made in south carolina
