so i got her friday pretty good deal since they usually go for like 350+ new, and this has one lil scratch on the back, not on the helmet really but some of the 0 from rf1000 is missing no biggie, plus i got an extra mirrord shield.
o man this thing is so friggin comfy, i never really knew what riding was like until this thing came along, its like half the wieght of my old hjc, cooler inside, and fits like a glove.
so just sharing
Do you really think dropping an empty helmet on carpet is going to ruin it? How? There is no mass inside (except some air) to crush the crush foam, and the shell isn't going to deflect much from an unloaded drop.
People fall off of motorcycles and have the helmets bang around on the street getting road-rash and don't always reduce the helmet's protective abilities. That's why Arai and the like will x-ray a helmet after a crash and OK it to be returned to service.
That said, I wouldn't buy a used or scratch-n-dent helmet unless I was able to x-ray it or the like.

It's entirely possible. It doesn't matter whether you have a head in a helmet or not, gravity is going to be in effect. The helmet has it's own mass, and dropping it even on something that you percieve as "soft" could damage it. The helmet's interior is going to "protect" whatever is in side whether it be soft grey matter or air. Sure, it could fall and be fine, but my point is that you simply never know. Why take the risk?
The helmet has mass, yes, but that isn't exactly the question. The question is, how much will the shell deflect? Because unless the shell deflects no harm is done.
I'm not saying it's a non-issue, but it isn't the mystery people make it out to be either.
