Ladies - Mama Riders
I sarted when I was 18 years old with a Vespa. Then, did not ride that at all for may years.
When my son was 13, he wanted a bike. Got a 50cc bike, later 100cc, then 250 cc street legal.
Did I fear an accident? Well I know it could happen, but hammered ito his head safety was the condition to let him go. NEVER WITHOUT A HELMET and protective gear. Trust was a must. It was a proviledge he had and many others did not.
Later he got a Ducati Monster 900. I asked him, can I try it? Yes!...hm.... be carfull mom!!!
That was it! .... He found me a nice used one. Then my husband decided to have a bike to. He got a big comfortable one, could ride long hours.
So...I was on the loosing end with y bike for this type of riding.
I am not tall, 5'5',.... what is out there to do long trips??
Now I am a very happy owner of a BMW R1150R. Plan to ride all over the US. Now I am a grandma too!

Im a mom
Not only am I a mom im a new rider...but not only is it me, it's also my sister and sister-in-law. Our husbands all have bikes and it was only a matter of time before we were joining them. Our kids thought were crazy, but once they saw that we wear all of our gear (well most of us) and cruise around safely, they felt better. I've always felt comfortable with it because we take the time to make it safe. I know thats not going to stop some other idiot on the road but there is not much you can do about that.
10 month old
I am a new mom. I've been riding for 6 years and my son was born in May 2005. I went from riding 7600 miles in 2004 to just over 650 last year during the riding season. I got back on my bike 6 weeks after the little pumpkin was born (had to wait 'cuz I had a c-section).
What's been great for me is my membership in Women in the Wind. The local chapter of women has been fantastic in supporting me and my desire to ride even having a little guy (they call him Fat Boy). My partner also is an avid rider. He's been riding for approximately 40 years since he was a kid on mini-bikes. We both have committed to making sure that we're able to pursue our dreams and to share that ability with our children.
I also have committed to Wednesday night Mommy night rides with the girls. Because my partner travels ALOT for work (80% or so), this involves rushing home, getting baby set up for babysitter, getting gear on & getting out the door to meet the gals at 6:30 half way across town.
Biking is like anything... if you have a passion & a commitment, you'll find a way with kids or without.

Is that an 1100? I am thinking of buyng a bike for touring and so far with what I have looked at a BMW seems to be the way to go. I really like the looks of yours. Would you say your bike is a good one for two adults to ride long distance?
Thanks,
John

She's 10, she's been on the back for about a year, since she could reach the pegs. When she was 5, I bought a side car rig for her. But that was not very fun riding for Mom. She thinks we look very cool together, and she's right.Henriettaah wrote:Are there any female members of the forum out there who are mothers? When did you start to ride - pre or post motherhood?![]()
Me and the kiddo head home from a camping trip, early October.

That is my K1200GT. And if by long distance you mean overnight travel, this is not the best choice for two up. There is very little room for gear. A better option, but still sporty is the R1200RT, bigger bags, and a rack in the back to secure gear too. When this picture was taken we were coming back from a camping trip. My beau was carrying the tent, 3 sleeping bags and other gear on his Road King. Of course with no passenger, I'd have had room for a little more gear, but I only have half a bag on the left side (muffler loss) and no platform on the tail.

Re: Mama Riders
I am looking for a bike to take on vacation rides and extended weekends. The three that have caught my eye so far are the BMW K series, Harley Davidson Road king, and Honda Gold Wing. I am asking around and looking. Thanks for the reply. I have not looked at any R series bikes but I will now.

Road King Classic
John,
besides owning a HD 1200c my husband and I own a HD Road King Classic. We travel long distance with it all the time (400 a day). In fact we will be riding it to Sturgis this year from upstate NY to celebrate our 25 wedding anniversary. The bike is very comfortable but you would probably want to change out the stock seat. My husband found it comfortable but as the passenger I found it unbearable.
