Insurance coverage

#1 Unread post by rugaluga »

Just curios to see what type of insurance coverage i should get. I'm a new rider looking to get the ninja 250. This is what I was thinking for coverage:

- Bodily Injury Liability: 15,000/30,000
- Property Damage Liability: 10,000
- Uninsured&Underinsured Motorist: reject
- Uninsured Motorist Property Damage: reject
- Medical Payments: 2,000

I just got PL/PD and comprehensive. Comprehensive protects me against any "act of God"; and missles (I kid you not, my policy says I'm protected against missles)

Your amounts sound a bit low to me. My coverage is a 12 month Policy on a 2006 Suzuki Boulevard S50 through Progressive for $149 with:

Liability to others:
Bodily Injury $100,000 each person / $300,000 each accident.
Property Damage $50,000 each accident

Pedestrian First Party Benefits: $5,000 per person

Comprehensive Deductible: $100

Collision Deductible: $500

Custom Parts or Equipment: $3,000 included with Comprehensive or Collision

Roadside Assistance

Contributing rebate factors are: I'm 35, married, own my home with a garage, no tickets or accidents in over 20 years, multiple vehicle policy (I have my ATV insured through them as well). **Edit: Two more factors are rebate for completing the MSF course and I've had a claim free policy with them for 5 or 6 years.**

wow a triple post lol

rugaluga when you have been with a company over 6 years your rates will be the best you can pretty much get anywhere. I have been with teh same insurance company for 10 years now and no one can beat their rates. Progressive wanted $1000/yr more than I pay now for what I own.

My insurance quote yesterday for a Yamaha V-Star 650 was $400.00 per year and I haven't even started riding yet.

To answer the first question, I would say get as much as you can reasonably afford. It's never a bad thing to have too much insurance, as long as you aren't getting ripped off for it. If you are financing the bike, I would get atleast what you need for it to be paid for if you crash it. Also, when I was checking through Progressive, insuring a 250-500cc sportbike (Ninja 250, 500, and GS500F is what I checked), it was twice as much as a 250-600ish cc cruiser (I checked Honda Rebel and Suzuki S40). With the cruiser, since it was so low, I could afford a lot of the extras like a low deductible, higher coverage, etc without much of a hike in rates. But on the sport bike, going from $1000 to $500 deductible tore me a new one!

I'm curious, does anyone know how much of a discount Progressive gives for multi-bike coverage? My step father and brother have their insurance together, and they want me to tag along on it. I was quoted around $850 from Progressive (which they use), and $750 from Dairyland/Sentry. That's for a 2006 Suzuki GS500F

This will be my first year riding motorcycles. I've had my ATV policy with them for 5 or 6 years. The one factor I forgot to mention was the rebate for the MSF course.

Maybe the insurance rates are simply cheaper here in PA. Or, my part of PA anyway. The S50 insurance will only be about $50 more than my ATV insurance.
